The first ever Rolling Stonerz BJJ Tournament, Waterbury CT
What is Rolling Stonerz BJJ? Rolling Stonerz Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a 420 friendly Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournament, where competitors have a chance to win pot for competing.
April 18th was the first event to be held ran by promoter Fabio Rivera. The tournament featured 16 competitors and was broken down into weight class divisions in a round-robin style bracket. The event pulled in an even better spectator turn out with over 150 paying spectators to the event.
For a first time event, the only thing to go wrong appeared to be the late start, other than that the entire staff was on point. After I was subbed with a heel hook, the medical staff took immediate note of my limp and promptly attended to me without me ever needing to wave them over. Manny, our ref for the event, was one of the best refs I’ve ever had. His professionalism toward competitors was beyond upstanding and I appreciate his attentiveness to safety during the matches, a future Herb dean.
The goal of Fabio and his promotion are to break the stigma around pot in the sporting community, by showcasing a positive and supportive environment for BJJ athletes to compete in. Fabio also wants to revolutionize the way competitors are rewarded for participation, giving each athlete who rolls a participation Nickle baggie.
“I hope that we can go all over CT with it and eventually do some events in other states along the east coast that have made cannabis legal. We were given such a great opportunity this generation, an opportunity that older generations have frowned upon. Each competitor of course was given cannabis and/or cannabis products as a gesture of appreciation for competing in our first tourney ever. Hope to do another one for this summer. We want to create a tournament where everyone is promised what they get and always given something for their time, hence the prizes. We are tired of seeing tournaments who charge competitors for just mat time. We want to give and offer more. Rolling stonerz will soon branch out into Rolling Season “
