Best Hiking Trails in Rotterdam, New York

Every town has its own little hikes, Rotterdam is fortunate to have three incredible hikes. Rotterdam is sizable town outside the city of Schenectady, New York and features unique land masses that even the residence may be unaware of like the pine barrens, waterfalls, and marshes! If you are traveling through or live near the area these are hikes you won’t want to miss from Rotterdam.

Woodlawn Preserve

A beautiful expanse found between Schenectady & Rotterdam, this spot is actually part of the much larger pine barrens of the Pine Bush! A unique land mass only seen in a few parts of the world. The Woodlawn preserve is one of my favorite spots from childhood, and features lots of trails, dirt biking paths, fishing, and a dock on a peninsula. The trails here are maintained by the community, and there has been a lot of effort to keep the area clean.

The Great Flatts Nature Trail

Built on a marsh, this hike features an easy walk through the marshes. Wooden bridges and dirt trails, lasting only a few miles on this loop. I cant emphasize how easy this trail is there are virtually no inclines or declines, making it perfect for morning walks with a coffee and the dog!

Plotterkill Preserve

This is probably the most expansive hike in the immediate area, with 632 acres of land with 3 entrances spread between its low and highlands. Plotterkill has stream bed you can walk down, and a massive waterfall you can see from either the low or high lands. Do be careful when approaching from the top, as many people have gotten hurt from falling down this sides. it is possible to climb the side though it doesn’t come advised.
