Visiting Long Lake

During a brief trip to upstate New York, we happened upon a tiny gem of the Adirondacks. The town of Long Lake was named after the 14-mile long lake that rests besides it. It’s one of the original towns created in the expansive 6 million acres state forest, established in the 1830s. The town of Long Lake is one the most popular resupply points, located at mile 100 of the 138 mile long Northville Placid Trail.

We popped into the shop for a quick minute and were then off to visit Buttermilk Falls, a part of the northern forest Canoe Trail. The Canoe Trail is a 740 mile route beginning in Old Forge, NY and ending in Fort Kent, Maine. It connects New York, Vermont, Quebec, New Hampshire, and Maine. The Northern Forest Canoe Trail consists of 23 rivers and streams, 59 lakes and ponds, 45 communities, and has 65 portages (70+ miles).

Emerging from the calm and peaceful Oswegatchie river, the falls were overflowing with rushing white water. The trail was well maintained, short, and easy to follow. It’s about 100 yards to the falls from the parking lot. A few picnic tables were scattered around for those who want a lunch with a view. Because it was winter, we were careful of our footing as the ice could be dangerous if navigated poorly.

It was a quick little visit to the town and sites around it and the day ended too soon. There are a lot more trails around for those who have more time and are looking for an adventure. If you’re a fan of the Adirondacks, definitely check it out!
