Richard Cloudhammer’s Inspirational Warrior’s Roots: Scotia, NY
Richard Cloudhammer’s journey into the realm of combat sports began in the quaint town of Scotia, New York, a place where friendships forged in the fires of training become rivalries on the mats.

Growing up in the 80s, Richard’s love for fighting was kindled by the dominant presence of boxing. From Rocky movies, real boxing matches, to the electrifying aura of Mike Tyson, the allure of combat was undeniable. The mystique deepened with old kung fu films, the charisma of Bruce Lee, and the digital battlegrounds of Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat.
Richard’s early exposure to combat sports was influenced by a stepfather with a penchant for street fighting. It was an unhealthy initiation, but it sowed the seeds of what would become a lifelong passion for Richard. His entry into the world of martial arts included stints in Tae Kwon Do and boxing, but it was the discovery of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) at the age of 35 that proved to be a life-changing moment.
Jason Rotter, a Professor at Jucao and a lifelong friend, played a pivotal role in introducing Richard to the world of BJJ. Little did Richard know that this decision would not only fill the void left by a relationship but also propel him on a journey of self-discovery and resilience.
A Grappler’s Revelation: From White Belt to the Cage
As Richard delved into the world of BJJ, he found solace and challenge in equal measure. Travelling to different states for competitions, he became obsessed with the art of grappling. What started as a way to fill time after a split from the mother of his children transformed into a profound passion.
At 35, Richard found himself standing at a crossroads. Having achieved personal milestones in BJJ, he decided to venture into the unforgiving world of mixed martial arts. The decision was not driven by the desire to dominate, but to face a monumental fear โ to prove to himself that with intent, a man can achieve what he wants.
“Jon Marconi, Iโve never officially met him but he was the boogeyman of his division and he was in his late 30s and I was like man if he can be THAT guy at our age I can at least get in there and crumble.”

Fighting, to Richard, is the ultimate litmus test of humanity. It’s not just about individual glory; it’s about building a tribe, competing individually, going in alone but carrying the collective spirit with you. A graffiti on an overpass seen at the age of 10 imprinted the mantra in Richard’s mind: “Mind. Body. Soul.” This philosophy would resonate through his fighting career.
From Turmoil to Triumph: Unveiling the Demons
Richard’s journey wasn’t just about stepping into the cage; it was about confronting personal demons and using the fight as a cathartic release. Raised in an environment marred by domestic violence and shelter-hopping, Richard’s path to the cage was a journey of healing.

The tumultuous experiences of his youth shaped Richard into the man he is today. A semi-mental breakdown at the age of 14 became a turning point. Jumping through women’s shelters, settling in Schenectady, and making friends that allowed him to be himself โ these were the building blocks of resilience.
His biological father’s involvement in illicit activities led to tragic consequences, but his mother’s decision to move him away from that environment set the stage for a different destiny. Richard’s stepfather, despite succumbing to the grips of drugs, inadvertently taught him the value of hard work and ambition.
While his early family life may have been marked by chaos, Richard found strength and support in his extended family. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins provided stability and love. The abnormality of his childhood only became apparent with time, but the strength derived from family was a constant.
Trials to Triumphs: A Fighter’s Inspiration
As Richard pursued his fighting career, inspirations flowed from various sources. At the core was his mother, a symbol of resilience who taught him to persevere through life’s challenges. His boys became catalysts for personal evolution, pushing him to become the man they needed.
“Fighting has become such a part of my soul it really changed my life. I owe it to Betty who really pushed me down this path believing I could do it before I could, and to my boys to show them that with hard work you can achieve anything. It introduced me to a network of people I never would have had the opportunity to engage with, and on top of all the rewarding experiences it gave me a gift of confidence knowing I was accepted as a peer by the people I looked up to most in the world- fighters.”

The dedication and loyalty of mentors like Nels Larson and Jay Rotter, the indomitable spirit of Alan, and the bravery displayed by fighters like Shane Secombe and Mike Alessi further fueled Richard’s passion. The local MMA community, especially Luis Melendez and Armando, provided a sense of camaraderie that went beyond competition.
The Present and the Future: A Fighter’s Aspirations
Having accomplished his initial goal of proving to himself that he could step into the cage, Richard Cloudhammer now sets his sights on new horizons. While recognizing the limitations imposed by age and circumstance, he aims to contribute to the MMA community in different capacities.
The next phase involves exploring avenues in commentating, social media engagement, and eventually managing and being an agent. Inspired by his trip to Miami with Luis Melendez, Richard envisions a future where he can guide fighters to reach their maximum potential. It’s not just about fighting; it’s about understanding the sport, promoting authenticity, and helping fighters navigate the complexities of their careers.
His involvement in projects with Jordan Turned and Nels Larson hints at a broader commitment to shaping the narrative of MMA. Richard Cloudhammer’s journey, though marked by personal triumphs, is far from over. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of a fighter who, having faced demons, now aspires to guide others through their own battles.
