Why Cage Wars MMA is Switching Venues
Cage Wars opts to improve its venue, following controversy in Schenectady, New York. The promotion recently ended its almost decade-long contract with Rivers Casino, due to conflicting views between local politicians and one of the event’s sponsors.
The sponsor Anthony Constantino, owner of Sticker Mule and currently running for Congress, recently produced an R-word pass sticker for disabled comedian Ricky Berwick. This prompted a response from local Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara, a longtime supporter of MMA in New York and supporter of Cage Wars MMA. In his response, he noted his displeasure with the company’s willingness to produce such material, referencing his son who has disabilities.
Following Santabarbra’s lead, Gary McCarthy Mayor of Schenectady, began distancing himself from the event. Even though less than 2 months prior, he gave Tim Rankins, owner of Cage Wars MMA, the “key to the city.”
“CEO, Tim Rankins, alleges that political bias led to the sudden cancellation of future events.” However, as of today, there is no solid proof; it would seem likely that, following the initial two responses from the mayor and local assembly representative, the casino opted to protect itself from a politically fueled response.
Big Changes For Cage Wars MMA, From Casino to an Arena!
The move, however, might bring the promotion a newfound home in Glens Falls and bigger opportunities, as Anthony Costantino sponsors their first-ever event in Glens Falls at the Cool Insuring Arena.
The new location will be able to hold 5,774 spectators, a vast improvement over the approximately 100 that the Rivers Casino Convention Hall could accommodate.
Despite how this move may have come about, the decision to relocate seems to be a smart one. With 27 sold-out shows over the past 8 years at rivers, Cage Wars has established that they know what fans want and are interested in.
