Ilia Topuria–Paddy Pimblett Rivalry Heats Up Again as UFC Matchup Gains Momentum

Ilia Topuria and Paddy Pimblett have renewed their rivalry as speculation grows about a potential UFC lightweight matchup.
The rivalry between Ilia Topuria and Paddy Pimblett is back in the spotlight, with another meme-style exchange circulating across social media and fans once again asking whether the UFC is finally preparing to put them in the Octagon together.
The latest exchange plays directly into their established roles. Topuria questions Pimblett’s championship-level ability, while Pimblett responds by mocking Topuria’s recent loss to Justin Gaethje. The posts may be designed for entertainment, but the hostility behind them has been developing for years.
Topuria and Pimblett’s rivalry began online before escalating into a physical confrontation at a fighter hotel ahead of UFC London in March 2022. They continued trading insults while competing in separate divisions, but the fight became realistic when Topuria moved to lightweight and captured the vacant championship by knocking out Charles Oliveira at UFC 317. Topuria then invited Pimblett into the cage for a tense faceoff, telling reporters afterward that he wanted the matchup.
The planned championship collision never materialized. Pimblett lost a unanimous decision to Gaethje in an interim lightweight title fight in January 2026. Gaethje then stopped Topuria before the fifth round of their June championship bout, leaving both rivals outside the immediate title position.
Pimblett wasted little time using Topuria’s defeat to restart the feud. He publicly mocked Topuria for failing to finish the fight and later claimed he had paid $13,700 for the stool used by Topuria’s corner during the loss. The authenticity of the purchase was later disputed, but the stunt accomplished its purpose: it placed Pimblett directly back into Topuria’s story. MMA Fighting reported the social-media stunt and its connection to their rivalry.
Is the fight actually likely?
The matchup now makes more competitive sense than it did when the rivalry began.
The UFC’s official lightweight rankings list Topuria as the division’s No. 1 contender and Pimblett at No. 5. Pimblett strengthened his case by submitting Benoît Saint Denis in only 52 seconds at UFC 329, earning the biggest victory of his UFC career.
A victory over Topuria could move Pimblett back toward a championship opportunity. For Topuria, defeating a top-five contender with considerable name recognition would immediately rebuild momentum following his first professional loss.
There is currently no official announcement or confirmed agreement for Topuria versus Pimblett. The biggest issue appears to be timing rather than interest.
Topuria is still recovering from the damage sustained against Gaethje, with an early 2027 return appearing more realistic than another fight before the end of 2026. Pimblett previously said he wanted to compete again this year and did not believe Topuria would be healthy soon enough to become his next opponent. Pimblett discussed that timeline before UFC 329, while making it clear that he still expects the rivalry to eventually be settled.
That leaves the fight in a realistic but unconfirmed position.
If Pimblett accepts waiting until early 2027, Topuria is arguably the most marketable opponent available to him. If Pimblett insists on returning before the end of this year, the UFC will probably need to book him against another leading contender.
The latest online insults do not confirm that contracts are being prepared. They do, however, show that neither fighter is allowing the rivalry to disappear.
Topuria versus Pimblett is not officially booked, but it has moved beyond fantasy matchmaking. The rankings support it, both fighters benefit from it, and the promotional story is already written. The remaining question is whether their schedules will finally align.
