According to locals who saw the altercation in the New York City Subway, Renzo Gracie was speaking with a fellow black belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu when a man approached them, disgruntled and angry because Renzo was speaking Brazilian Portuguese with his friend.

People claim the aggressor began screaming vulgarities & racial comments, before stating “we speak English here”. *
Some time after that the interaction must have become physical at which point Renzo (Gracie jiu jitsu black belt), took the individual to the ground where they stayed until the altercation was broken up.
