Who is Temu?
Temu is a popular online store with multiple locations worldwide. It positions itself as an affordable option, offering products that embody luxury. You have probably come across one or two Temu ads on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, or Youtube, similar to the early days of TikTok. To make its presence known during its launch, the brand invested a hefty sum of 14 million dollars in Super Bowl ads and launched an aggressive social media campaign, leveraging influential personalities to promote the brand.
Business ethics? what are those?
Apart from its questionable practices of selling stolen intellectual property, Temu has a rather murky history. Once claiming to be a subsidiary of Pdd Holdings, a Chinese company worth billions, Temu has since removed any mention of Pdd Holdings on their websites’ “about us” section. Instead, they now state their founding location as Boston, Massachusetts. However, even more curious is the fact that their official records list the company as Whaleco Inc in Delaware, with claims that they are governed under NYS laws.
While Temu claims to act as a broker between manufacturers and consumers, a thorough investigation by Wired U.K. revealed that Temu was pressuring small sellers to cut corners and provide subpar products to stock their warehouses located in Guangzhou, China. Therefore, despite allowing small sellers to enter the Temu marketplace, similar to platforms like Amazon or Ebay, sellers may face potential financial losses.
Although Temu tries to distance itself from China through a convoluted network of subsidiaries and legal frameworks, it cannot distance itself from consumer experiences. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) Director, Melanie Mcgovern, expressed surprise in a December 2022 interview, stating
“it is unusual for such a new company to receive so many complaints in such a short time”

Is Temu worth all the hype?
Numerous Temu consumers have reported delays in shipping and, in some cases, orders not arriving at all. Additionally, there have been numerous complaints about customer service issues, including delayed or denied refund policies. It seems that Temu prioritizes undercutting its competition over providing quality products or satisfactory customer service. Unfortunately, this approach has resulted in disappointment for consumers who expected more from the brand.
