Get Fit Riding your Bike with Grand Theft Auto V the Video Game
While scrolling YouTube shorts the other day, I was surprised to find a stream of a man from Melbourne Australia riding his bike while playing the popular video game Grand Theft Auto 5, the game that has come out with a shocking number of mods, despite rockstar games trying to stop mods from building upon their games.
What took me for a ride was the fascinating connection between my actions and my in-game character’s movements; as the man peddled, I noticed that his character physically mirrored each motion he made. If he turned left, his character turned left simultaneously, creating an immersive experience that made me feel truly engaged. It was as if he had a direct line of control over the virtual avatar, and each turn felt like a new adventure waiting to unfold. This seamless integration of real-world movements with digital gameplay only heightened the thrill of the game.
And as winter kicks in here in my home state of New York, I’m going to be looking for alternative cardio to try aside from running. With this recent discovery it seemed as good a time as any to grab a fresh copy of GTA V, plug in a bike and get to riding the streets of Los Santos!
How to Start Riding Your Virtual Bike Through Los Santos
GTBike V requires specific hardware and software setups to function effectively, integrating fitness equipment with the GTA V game to enhance the gaming experience for cyclists and runners.
Requirements
- Hardware Requirements:
- A Windows PC that meets the GTA V system requirements.
- ANT+ dongle or Bluetooth capability is needed for device communication.
- Basic peripherals include a keyboard, with NumPad and internet connection being optional.
- Cycling Equipment:
- Smart trainer compatible with ANT+ FE-C or BLE FTMS, or an ANT+ / BLE Cycling Power Meter, or Speed Sensor.
- A compatible bicycle.
- Running Equipment:
- Smart treadmill compatible with ANT+ FE-C or BLE FTMS, or an ANT+ / BLE stride-based speed and distance running sensor.
- Running shoes suitable for treadmill use.
- Software Requirements:
- The latest version of GTA V for Windows PC, purchasable from Steam or Epic Games.
- Specific mods and scripts such as ScripthookV, ScripHooktVDotnet, and the GT Bike V Mod are necessary for integration.
- Optional software may include Microsoft .Net Framework 4.5.2 or later and Visual C++ Redistributable Packages.
What Kind of Bikes and Trainers Work with the Mod?
Garmin:
- Tacx NEO 2T Smart Trainer: This high-end direct-drive trainer supports both ANT+ FE-C and Bluetooth FTMS protocols, ensuring seamless connectivity with various applications. It’s available for approximately $1,400.
- Tacx FLUX S Smart Trainer: A more affordable direct-drive option, the FLUX S also supports ANT+ FE-C and Bluetooth FTMS, priced around $750.
Bowflex:
- Bowflex C6 Bike: This indoor cycling bike is equipped with Bluetooth connectivity and is compatible with various cycling apps. However, it does not specify support for ANT+ FE-C or Bluetooth FTMS protocols, Priced around $999
How Much Does the Whole Set Up Cost?
Putting this all together is not going to be cheap. GTA V on the pc requires a decent computer to start, if you don’t have one yet we recommend a Gaming Republic Model for affordability and performance. If you have a computer already, you’re going to want to download the game from either Steam (more editions available, base price $29.98) or directly from Rockstargames ($29.99).

On the high end to set up GTbike V you may be looking at nearly $5,000 dollars if we round up to the near thousand, on the low end you maybe looking at $2,000 dollars rounded up again. If you already own a computer and are set on doing this set up, consider trying out your current computer with the game to see if it is stable, this can save you thousands before you even get started.
