Unified 69 Preview: Hakeem Dawodu Meets Mateo Vogel in Canadian Featherweight Title Fight

Unified MMA brings its featherweight championship back to River Cree Resort & Casino in Enoch, Alberta, on Friday, September 18, when Hakeem Dawodu defends against former champion Mateo Vogel.
Unified’s current event listing identifies Dawodu–Vogel as the featherweight championship co-main event. It is an unusually meaningful regional title fight: the reigning champion has extensive UFC experience, while the challenger previously held this same championship and owns one of the more submission-oriented records in Canadian featherweight MMA.
This is not simply a veteran being booked against a younger prospect. Both men have already completed five-round championship wins under the Unified banner, and both have proved difficult to stop.
Two Unified Champions, Two Very Different Routes
Dawodu enters at 14-4-1. His professional record lists seven knockouts and seven decisions, meaning every one of his victories has come through strikes or on the scorecards. He has never lost by knockout or TKO; his four defeats consist of three decisions and one submission.
His level of competition is the clearest separator. Dawodu went 6-4 in the UFC and faced opponents including Movsar Evloev, Cub Swanson, Julian Erosa, Michael Trizano, Julio Arce and Zubaira Tukhugov. He returned to Canada in October 2025 and defeated Jake Geauvreau by unanimous decision across five rounds to claim Unified’s vacant featherweight championship.
Vogel is 9-3 with a more varied finishing profile. His nine wins include two knockouts, four submissions and three decisions. None of his three professional losses came by a legal stoppage: two were decisions, while the other was a disqualification for illegal upkicks.
Vogel won the Unified championship in January 2024 by defeating John Nguyen over five rounds, according to the promotion’s official Unified 55 results. That remains his most recent fight, creating a layoff of roughly 32 months by the time he faces Dawodu.
The inactivity matters, but it should not erase Vogel’s accomplishments. Before beating Nguyen, he had competed on Dana White’s Contender Series and earned victories over Garrett Armfield, Serhiy Sidey and Drew Brokenshire. His record shows a legitimate ability to win prolonged decisions as well as find submissions after opponents have been forced into grappling exchanges.
Where the Fight May Be Decided
Dawodu’s most reliable path is controlling distance and forcing Vogel to solve a measured striking fight. His record suggests he no longer needs an early knockout to win. Seven decision victories and a completed five-round title performance give him credible routes through accumulated damage, cage position and round management.
Vogel’s clearest advantage is the submission threat. Dawodu’s only stoppage loss came by guillotine choke, while four of Vogel’s nine wins have come by submission. That does not automatically make Vogel the better overall grappler, but it creates the matchup’s most important tactical question: can Vogel turn striking entries or clinch contact into sustained ground exchanges?
Dawodu also owns the cleaner durability history. Neither fighter has been knocked out professionally, but Dawodu has maintained that record across a much deeper schedule. Vogel cannot depend on simply surviving at range and winning the occasional scramble. He will probably need to make Dawodu defend takedowns, expose his neck during transitions or spend energy separating from the fence.
The longer the fight stays upright, the more the matchup appears to favor Dawodu. If Vogel repeatedly reaches the hips, back or front headlock, the forecast tightens quickly.
Age pulls in the opposite direction. Dawodu will be 35 on fight night and Vogel 30. That gap adds some uncertainty, especially because Vogel has been away long enough to return as a meaningfully different athlete. The problem is that a long layoff provides no verified evidence of improvement by itself. Until Vogel competes again, his current timing, pace and ability to maintain wrestling pressure remain unknown rather than upgraded.

Sherdog’s current Unified 69 event listing also names Hunter Lee against Darian Weeks and Jake Craig against former UFC heavyweight Don’Tale Mayes. Unified has not yet reproduced that full slate in accessible event-page text, so those supporting bookings should be rechecked before publication.
Dawodu–Vogel is the best-established fight on the card because the promotion continues to feature it directly on both its home page and dedicated championship listing.
