Christman Bird and Wildlife Sanctuary, Delanson NY
A short drive from Schenectady, NY and just outside Princetown in the town of Delanson we found this incredible hiking trail. Very well maintained by the volunteers of The Nature Conservancy, this trail has plank bridges made for ease of access that look brand new!
This land once being a gift from the Christman family, has been maintained and cherished by its community as it once was by its previous owners. Small memorials to the former owners can be found on the memorial trail, and another by the first bridge after coming in.
Do note while the land is easy to walk, its still easy to get lost, be sure to be mindful and ever present and follow the markers.
Among the amazing features there is a memorial trail, the stone staircases, and the lean-to by the waterfalll. While on the blue trail you will walk into a junction, where you will be able to see the river/stream bed. Along that junction slightly to the right is a trail that runs along the edge, this trail sits on several layers of shale that at one point will arch over the trail and underneath it as well much like a crescent of uneven rock.
Following this trail takes you to this unique spot nestled at the bottom of the 30 foot water fall. What I loved was the lean-to right next to the falls offering folks a beautiful spot to chill and have a picnic.
We managed to get on top the waterfall by climbing a system of roots behind the lean-to, taking a slight detour up and around we were able to look down from the 30 foot drop above offering another amazing perspective. Behind the initial 30 foot falls is another hidden 5 foot drop, the only shame was that the water wasn’t really flowing at this time.
The whole trail probably makes up about 1.5-2 miles, and comes highly recommended. The public clearly agrees, as we seen several families and couples of all ages traversing these trails and hear from several people on Instagram who also loved this spot.
