Shelving Rock Falls

Shelving Rock Falls

from half lot to not a spot in sight

Located in Fort Ann, NY, a township within the Lake George wild forest area of the great Adirondacks. Shelving Rock falls is a highly trafficked path, and fortunately plenty of parking is available with 3 lots available. Make sure you still plan to get there earlier. We arrived at roughly 9:26 AM, and the lot we had stayed at wasn’t too filled. However by 11 AM when we began leaving, we noticed all 3 lots had filled up with cars and people. An important side note as well, the road in is more narrow than not, so be mindful and don’t rush, there’s not a lot of room for mistakes.

The trail is rated as easy by AllTrails, and I would agree. Aside from a few inclines, it’s a lot of flat land and beautiful views. The incline/decline mentioned along the trail follows the stream starting at the bridge, and going along the falls and all the way down to the lake. You may even notice some boaters parking near the shore and walking in to use the John or checking out the falls. This trail does have outhouses along it if you are so inclined to use them.

The falls will be on the right hand side, assuming you followed the stream in from the bridge on the main road. Once you are there you will most certainly know, by the number of people and pure size and beauty of this local falls. The rock surface is climbable, but just be mindful of the slippery rock. I climbed to the ledge and almost bailed half way up!

If you are inclined to go swimming make sure you bring your swim suit and go straight to the bottom of the trail, there is direct access to lake George. While I’m not sure if its permitted, people still jump out from the trail for a swim.
