Traveling in and out of New York City for training on a Budget

Recently, I embarked on a new journey of training at a second gym in the bustling city of New York. This gym, known as 10th Planet, holds a special place in the hearts of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu enthusiasts due to its unique approach, focusing on techniques such as the leg lock game, rubber guard, and moves that require a higher level of flexibility.

Being deeply fascinated by their approach and wanting to learn from some of the best in the industry, such as the legendary Miao brothers and Giono Grippo, I took advantage of my time in the city to train with this amazing team. As the new year approaches and my 9+1 training sessions come to an end, I want to share some strategies I’ve used and will continue to use to ensure that I can continue training with this extraordinary team, as well as explore other potential gyms in the area.

One of the key strategies I’ve found helpful is to come with a plan. It may seem like a simple concept, but having a solid plan in place is crucial. Before visiting any gym, it’s important to research and know the mat fee, as well as be aware of the nearest hospitals in case of any unexpected injuries or emergencies. Additionally, mapping out routes and distances between your accommodation, arrival point, race (if applicable), and the gym itself allows for better time management and potentially saving money on public transportation, which can then be allocated towards other training essentials.

Another strategy that has proven beneficial is bringing your own food. This not only helps you stay on track with your dietary goals but also allows you to save some extra cash. While it’s not necessary to pack multiple full meals, bringing along healthy snacks and items can prevent you from overspending at convenience stores. Consider packing options such as Metx Meal replacement bars, sugarless dried fruits or trail mixes (look for ones with omegas if possible), shakable drink packs like Pedialyte Sport, and protein-fortified cookies or treats like Lenny & Larry’s or Pure.

In addition to saving money on food, finding alternative transportation methods can also be a great money-saving strategy. Using a skateboard or bike while in the city not only adds an element of fun but also helps you avoid spending on public transportation. Not to mention, it gives you the opportunity to explore the city and its surroundings in a unique way.

When it comes to accommodation, consider budget-friendly options like hostels or the YMCA. These affordable choices allow you to allocate more funds towards your training and experiences in the city, rather than investing heavily in accommodation.

Building a network of friends in the area is another strategy that can prove incredibly beneficial. Connecting with like-minded individuals who share your passion for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can open doors to new training opportunities and provide you with a support system as you navigate the vibrant New York City grappling scene.

Lastly, taking the bus can be a huge money saver. Instead of relying on other means of transportation, opt for bus travel when feasible. Not only does it offer cost savings, but it also allows you to sit back, relax, and enjoy the journey while you prepare mentally for your training sessions.

As the next year approaches, I am filled with excitement and determination to continue my training at 10th Planet and other gyms in the area. By implementing strategies such as coming with a well-thought-out plan, bringing my own food, utilizing alternative transportation methods, staying in budget-friendly accommodations, building a network of friends, and taking advantage of bus travel, I am confident that I can continue my journey in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu while exploring all that the vibrant New York City grappling scene has to offer.

So, if you are planning to train at multiple gyms or simply want to optimize your experience at 10th Planet in New York City, consider incorporating these strategies into your routine. Train hard, stay focused, and make the most of your journey in the world of BJJ!
