What is the 9+1 program at NYRR?

This year jmurrayathletics has decided to do the 9+1 program from NYRR, a challenge of sorts for runners to gain non-complimentary guaranteed entry to the 2023 NYC Marathon. The marathon is the largest in the country at roughly 50k annual runners, so getting in can be tough. Normally a racer would have to enter the draft or have a qualifying race time, but with the 9+1 you get to run your way to the front of the line.
In order to get entry you will need to run and complete 9 races from New York Road Runners. There are 30+ in person races available for the 2022 year and 3 virtual races. The “+1” refers to the volunteering you will have to do at one of NYRR’s races, I recommend volunteering with something big like the Bronx 10 or the Brooklyn half. When I volunteered in 2017 and worked bag check at the Bronx 10 mile, we had something over 5k runners and it was certainly an experience but an easy one. NYRR has many experienced event coordinators who are both knowledgeable and great teachers.
Having done the 9+1 before in 2017 I am excited to be back and doing it again but better, and this time being able to bring all of you along for the journey. We have already started the 9+1 series on YouTube, where we started off in January with the Joe Kleinerman 10k. You can check out that video below, and if your racing this year drop a comment on one of the videos! If you see me stop me for a quick Insta pic, I plug and share channels all the time. Hope to see you out there running!
