Running the Manhattan 10k

The second race in our 9+1 series, The Manhattan 10k is a race centered in Manhattan’s Central Park southern half. Race-Day Central was located parallel to E. 72 St. and the race start is parallel with 69th St. Everything being conveniently located and easily accessible from the subways and main roads.

This year we were requested to schedule our bib pick ups in advance, possibly due to covid policies and changes around the city. I was unable to reach NYRR HQ before they closed Saturday, so I had to opted for the morning of the race and braved the extra hour in the 17 degree weather. A light warm up jog and some dynamic stretches later and the race was started.

As always everything at NYRR was super organized, and the race began at 8 am on the dot. The course was very similar to the Joek 10k and followed most of the same roads, be wary the course has some steep inclines and declines, challenging your pace and footing before leveling off at the end of the course.
The top mile finisher was Harbert Okati at 0:32:59 with a 5:19 pace, and the top female finisher Theresa McCabe at 0:36:56 with a 5:57 pace. The average time for runners on this course was 0:55:23.

The turnout for the race was epic, close to 5k runners! 4,489 total, 2,359 males, 2,116 females, and 9 non binary. All of which got to enjoy a delicious bagel, fruit, and hot chocolate curtesy of NYRR.
Overall this is a great race that provides a decent challenge, a point to your 9+1 and your 6 borough series. It does tend to be a bit colder this time of year, but if you prep right and wear the right gear you’ll make off fine.
